Beyond Survival Skills: A Workshop for Teaching Assistants
This workshop is designed to provide a fundamental skill set of behavioral and teaching strategies to para-educators who are responsible for supervision and/or instructional activities for children with special needs. The content has been specifically tailored for those working with children with autism, and also is applicable to those working with children across the spectrum of disabilities. The basic workshop is conducted as a two-day activity, but the length can be individualized to meet the needs of a specific program or district. . Follow-up consultation, known to be a key factor in successful implementation of any training package, is encouraged and available.
What You Will Learn:
- How to examine various types of reinforcement schedules under both natural and arbitrary contingencies
- How to examine behavior in terms of sequences and functional outcomes;
- How to expand a “common language” which will assist in problem solving in various school and community settings
- How to examine the effective application of prompting, shaping, and error- correction strategies
- How to recognize the effects of the interface of staff behavior with that of the child.
