Study Guide: Creating Effective Learning Environments
The creators of PECS are now offering you an opportunity to learn all you ever wanted to know about teaching students with developmental disabilities. This self-study allows you to work at your own pace to read the Pyramid Approach to Education in Autism book and complete the study guide filled with practical questions.
Participants will focus on the review of essential elements in creating an effective educational environment for learners with developmental disabilities. Specific topics include functional activities, reinforcement, communication, contextually inappropriate behaviors, generalization, lesson formats, error correction, teaching strategies and data collection/analysis. Completion of the study guide allows reflection and implementation of all concepts highlighted within the text.
Upon completion of this course, participants will demonstrate the ability to:
- Identify and incorporate components for an effective learning environment
- Incorporate effective visual reinforcement strategies for all learners
- Identify and describe functional activities across domains
- Define functional communication and identify the conditions under which it occurs
- Identify appropriate lesson types across a variety of skills
- Identify effective teaching strategies to promote skills across domains
- Implement effective error correction strategies to promote skills across domains
- Identify and implement teaching of the critical expressive communication skills for individuals using a variety of communication modalities
- Create lesson plans incorporating all aspects of the Pyramid Approach to Education
- Create operational definitions of contextually inappropriate behaviors
- Identify functionally equivalent alternative behaviors to contextually inappropriate behaviors
